In 2008, I believe that Classic Rock had a resurgence. Much of the resurgence was due to the popularity of "Rock Band" and "Guitar Hero". However it was very good to see the Classic Rock was alive and well on the music scene. Steve Winwood released an unbelievable album called "Nine Lives" that personsifies some good Classic Rock. Yes, this album is in the running for L.A. Scene's 2008 Album of the Year which will be decided soon!
"Dirty City" is just an unbelievable piece of music. He gets a lot of help from old friend Eric Clapton - who provides some of his best guitar work I have ever heard him do! However, it's not just the guitar - its some great keyboard and bass work on top of it. The song grabs you, it hooks you and you can't get it out of your mind!
Check out the video. Unfortunately it is for a shortened version of the song.
Back in the late 1980s, Winwood had a big resurgence in his career. L.A. Scene gave him two "Songs of the Year" for "The Finer Things" and "Don't You Know What the Night Can Do?". Those are two great songs, but "Dirty City" might be his best - and perhaps the one that might be his signature song . Winwood's showing age, but not losing any steam. With his third "Song of the Year" by me, he becomes the first artist to capture three LA Scene "Song of the Year" awards.
In earlier years, I used to consider songs released as singles. While "Dirty City" was a single, I want to point out this is no longer a criteria for my selection. By the way, commercial radio (including classic rock stations) did not play this song. It deserved much better.
Here is the historical list. My music taste evolved over this period, but these were my selections as I have done this every year since 1983.
1983 All Night Long, Lionel Richie
1984 When Doves Cry, Prince and the Revolution
1985 If You Love Somebody Set Them Free, Sting
1986 Sweet Freedom, Michael McDonald
