The Home Stretch

I'm in the home stretch of National Novel Writing Month. The good news is that I have hit the 50000 word mark. In fact, I seemed to hit it rather easily. My Novel, "Best Friends", seemed to flow rather nicely to the 50k mark. I reached the 50k mark on Thanksgiving Morning. I was thrilled to do it.

I figured I would coast home. I had the ending of my story pretty well-defined and figured this would be an easy run to the finish. However, I've definitely hit the wall the past couple of days. Perhaps I have high standards on what I want to do to finish this. However, I'm having second thoughts about the road to the ending.

I've opted to finish the Novel and claim victory in Nanowrimo. I won't do that unless I get to the final ending. My plan is to go back to enter March's National Noveling Editing Month (NaNoEdMo) and revisit the ending.

Here is my exerpt from Chapter 6:

Eventually they reached unit #3232 on Victory Boulevard. This would be the unit that would contain a unit that would serve as the office for Dieter Ludvich. Like many of the other units in the Complex, this one had also gone downhill over the past 20 years. Paul and Tom opened the outer door to the Garden Apartment door. The brown paint on the outer door clearly showed a lot of scratches. Paul then rang the unit for #4 – that was Dieter’s Office. The two waited a minute and then they were buzzed in and went through the inner door. Once in the Garden Apartment Unit, they turned to the right and that was unit 4. The door was slightly opened, so Paul and Tom went in.

Although this was an apartment unit, Dieter had this setup as a regular office. Despite the dingy appearance of the outside of Bulls Head Gardens, the inside of Ludvich’s apartment appeared to have all of the luxuries of any modern office.

An older woman was at a receptionist desk with the name plate of “Mary Harding”. Paul went up to the desk and said, “Can I help you?”

“I’m Paul Merlino, and I’m hear to see Dieter Ludvich”

Mary quickly glanced at the appointment book and after a quick glance, she turned back around and said “Ah yes, Mr, Merlino. You are a few minutes early, but that’s ok. He should be ready to see you quickly.” At that point, Mary turned to Tom and said:

“I’m Tom Mullaney. I’m Mr. Merlino’s associate.”

“Ah associate,” Mary said looking at Tom’s more casual attire compared to Paul’s dress to impress look. Mary clearly saw that Tom wasn’t quite Paul’s associate, but she was willing to let Tom play the game he was playing. At that point, Mary walked over to the air-conditioning unit that was in the room and turned it up higher. Meanwhile Paul and Tom walked over to have some seats. Meanwhile Mary walked back to one of the bedrooms in the unit that was now functioning as an office and said “Mr. Merlino and his, um associate are here”.

“Thank you Mary, please give me one minute,” responded Dieter in a voice that also had a German accent.

Today's Song: Holiday by Green Day

I'm not sure why this song is in my head, but it is. During Inxs RockStar, Verizon Wireless ran a major ad campaign to promote their new ringback tones. This song by Green Day was the song that was used to hype the campaign. I'm no Green Day fan. I'm not happy how their American Idiot album is basically used to badmouth our Presiden - George W. Bush. However, this song does have a very catchy beat. This song almost reflects the music style of the 2000's decade. There is some very good guitar work. Although I'll never purchase American Idiot or this song, I have to admit it's not a bad one.
